Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

So this isn't one of those knock-your-socks-off dahlias that make people stop and stare from across the street. This plant produces small (2"), delicate blooms atop medium-length, dark purple stems, and exactly as pictured. It started blooming for me late August in Zone 7, required minimal staking, and is about 3' tall. It's not a prolific bloomer -- I'll get 1-3 blooms per day -- but they are lovely in cut arrangements as a darker foil against whites and pinks. They last about 3 days in an arrangement before fading. When they first started blooming I was a little disappointed at how small and insignificant they appeared. I grow dahlias for the end-of-season WOW factor. But it's a variety that's really grown on me and will definitely be overwintered inside and replanted next year.
