How to Grow

Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

Early to bloom

This is my third year with tutti frutti. It overwinters well! This year it was one of the first to bloom and while the stem was short, the buds on it now have longer stems. I love this color and shape of the blooms.

First to bloom in 2022

I have three of these and I picked my first vase full today on May 28 which is amazingly early to have that many blooms---even in sunny California.

Pretty Little Puffs

This bloomed bubble gum pink in my Pacific Northwest garden. I planted it on the in a south facing bed against my house. It got direct sun for 6+ hours and plenty of water. The stems were short and thin. I mostly used it in little vases with 2-4 blooms. Cute. Dragonberry bloomed beautifully in the same spot with much longer & stronger stems.
