Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

This is Dragonberry's first year and it's already a showstopper. Color is exactly as pictured. Growing vigorously despite the killer bunny rabbits eating the bottom 18" of foliage.
Dragonberry is a very striking dahlia. It is quite proliferous. (Zone 5/6 south central Michigan)
One of my first bloomers of the season, and it is just absolutely beautiful with its bright colors of punch.
This my 3rd year growing this variety, I'd say don't give up on this one! The first year might not have been the right weather/conditions but since then it is a total beast, I have to re-stake/tie in a few times a year and the blooms are non-stop and so unique!
Just love the vivid hues. Mine didn't get exceptionally tall (some blossoms are rather hidden among the other stems) but it keeps on blooming, and oh, those flowers. So striking in an arrangement.
