Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

I was so looking forward to growing this flower and it never came up for me.
Vintage was my overall best because it 1) bloomed consistently and well throughout the season, 2) was more resistant to powdery mildew, 3) produced robust blooms with long and sturdy stems, and 4) the blooms lasted well in the bouquets. Often I would compost all but the vintage. They'd still have some life in them, and so I'd trim the stems and put them in their own vase for a couple more days of guaranteed smiles when I saw their perfect purple-pink hues. I loved so many of my dahlias from swan island this year. I wanted to be surrounded by flowers this season and I certainly was! As were my friends and neighbors! Dahlia appreciation was in abundance.
