Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

4" blooms are a deep black red in this much sought after color. A very nice arranging variety that grows on a 5' plant. Lots of long stems and blooms make this another great addition to the cut flower garden.

Tuber planted May 19 along with 13 other SI tubers. It was one of the last to emerge, in mid June. On July 4 I noticed the plant (under 6 inches tall) completely wilted; I thought it was a goner. But it revived and has slowly grown. While the other varieties are 4 to 5 feet tall and blooming gloriously, now (August 25) it's under 2 ft with no sign of buds. I've pruned back the towering plants on either side to allow it some sun, but I despair of getting any flowers. Not giving up, but pretty disappointed at this point.
