JUNKYARD DOG

I planted my "Junkyard Dog" tuber in front of a tall, small trellis at the start of one of my garden rows so it would be "front and center" when I walked through my garden gate. What a wonderful blossom to see throughout the growing season! It looks like the photo on the SID website and the blossom is big and eye-catching. It remind me of a BIG clematis blossom that provides weeks of blooms!! I hesitated buying this tuber for a couple years because it was described as being a "late" bloomer. My plant here in New Jersey started blooming in July and is full of blooms now in September. I have not cut a blossom for a vase as I like seeing them on the plant in my garden. It is such a unique flower and the pollinators love it too! If you want to try something different, that doesn't look like the typical dahlia, you won't be disappointed.

This is one wild looking dahlia. The color is accurate on my computer screen. If anything, the flower is even more striking in the garden. Some of the flowers don't open up fully, but that takes a back seat to the crazy WOW factor of this dahlia. I've only had it for two seasons and it does seem to bloom on the late side. And, yes, as other reviewers noted, bees love this dahlia. No one who visits our garden fails to comment on "Dog." I admit to not cutting it often, as I tend to lazily cut later in the day, and by then the bees have usually camped out, but when I have I get a few good days enjoyed inside. I consider this dahlia a must have, even with its inconsistant blooms.

I have grown this variety in Northern New Mexico for about a decade and I just love it! Tall plant needs a stake but produces perfect color pop along a coyote fence. Does not do well as a cut flower but the bees sure love it so leave it! I deadhead and disbud for large, constant blooms.

I’m California zone 9, flowered in late May, strong tall, deep green foliage. Love the color! So bright and cheerful! Received one large tuber with one eye! Very happy and would order again!

Struggled all summer and just getting buds in late September. Will try again next year.

Very pretty flowers, but a very late bloomer and the centers blew quickly. Mine were short lasting on the plant and had 0 vase life. I was planning on entering this in to our local dahlia show, and they didn't even last overnight in a vase.

Grown in full sun, zone 5 so short growing season. I grow several dozen plants of 8-10 varieties each year. Blooms are more pink than photo, about 5", on long stems. Very striking. Bees love them. Late bloomer and not prolific. 2-3 days in the vase before petals drop. 3' sturdy plant. One of the few I can get away with not staking. Tubers are very long. I have to cut them in half in order to start in a 1 gal pot. Worth growing.

I've been growing this beauty for years & years, dividing the tuber & giving it to friends who can't believe their eyes when it blooms. Unfortunately, it did not survive over-wintering here in New England. I bought another this year & while it grows similarly to my previous Junkyard Dog, the flower is more streaked than outlined & it is a double. It is still one of the most outstanding dahlias in my garden & I'll continue to grow it as it's even more striking than the previous plant.

I think this just may be my favorite so far. So many beautiful blooms . Everyone who seen it commented on how beautiful it was....and the bees loved it too

Buy it! you won't be disappointed. It is a prolific bloomer, the blooms are big and can be seen across the yard, it is also very popular with the bee population.
