How to Grow

Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

Star Child is very pretty in the garden and a great attractor of pollinators. I’m rating this an 3 because we grow dahlias to cut and it’s been our experience that the peddles are very delicate & once cut and put on a vase fall off the stem quickly.

Star Child is the first dahlia to bloom in my garden and it’s amazingly prolific. Visitors always admire it. For me this plant is 4.5 feet tall and possibly wider than 3.5 feet, flowers don’t last long but there so many of them it doesn’t matter, must deadhead every day and bees absolutely love it.

No

The stems on mine were very spindly and short. The flowers had 0 vase life. Also a late bloomer and needed much more support than my other dahlias. I won't grow it next year.

Striking flower

This is a lovely, delicate dahlia to add to your collection. I've cut it for arrangements & depending on how soon you cut it after it opens, it may only last 36 hours & the petals fall off, one by one. It has never grown over 3' & it is a compact grower.

Extremely prolific, short vase life

Planted 5/17 in Colorado foothills, started blooming in late August. One plant has produced dozens of flowers. Extremely prolific with no coddling whatsoever. Unfortunately, the petals start to drop within a day or two of cutting for bouquets. The pollen is a bit messy, too. --But they look absolutely DIVINE.

Quite prolific

This is the most prolific flower in my garden this year. It is a great addition to all my bouquets.
