GAY PRINCESS
How to Grow
Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

This was first of my dahlias to bloom. The second year it was 5 ft tall and 3 ft wide, covered with blooms. Only problem was staking it. I had not expected it to be so large.

Gay Princess was the first to bloom in my dahlia garden and has bloomed consistently since. She has a decent vase life and has earned a spot in my garden. Mine are a lighter pink than the picture, but still beautiful. She is a tall plant.

Year 2 for my Gay Princess this season. The color is amazing with the center of the flower fading to a lighter pink. I love the texture in the petals and the softness it conveys. The tubers took awhile to come to life for me but they are so worth it!

I only have 3 varieties but I chose all of them for early bloom. Gay Princess has been in bloom for 2 weeks and I am just seeing buds form of the other 2 I have. It has quite a few blooms open and a lot more coming. It has had to fight pink cosmos and iris for space and light but still did well. Beautiful clear pink, a bit lighter than catalog shows. I recommend it

It was a long wait for my Gay Princess' to bloom zone 6a. Of course it has been a crazy growing season, starting with drought, wildfire smoke and then more rain than we've ever had in July & August. The dahlias are now thriving. I sure hope we have a late frost!

Grown in full sun, zone 5 so short growing season. I grow several dozen plants of 8-10 varieties each year. I find blooms are stunning, about 4.5", on long stems. 4' plant. Great cut flower that lasts 4-5 days. First dahlia to bloom in my garden. Stake it well. Heavy flowers + wind = broken plant. One of my two most favorite.

These are incredible dahlias- they look like a Japanese woodblock print. I thought these would be nice but a tad forgettable, but they are the standout (among standouts!). Delicious ombre and coloring and beautiful, robust, quick blooms.

I LOVE this dahlia! It is the most gorgeous true pink. First to bloom and tons of flowers. Lasts forever in a vase. First year with it and am so pleased. Can't wait to see what she does next year!

I’ve had my Gay Princess for years now. Bought one tuber maybe 5 years ago. It’s multiplied well. It’s stored well. Most significant to me though, is it’s RELIABLE bloom power! Some of my varieties may fluctuate year to year. Not my Gay Princess! Love her!

This lovely pink dahlia is always the first to bloom in my garden and produces so many blooms you can't even count them all. It is a medium plant and the blooms are bright pink with a touch of yellow in the center.
