Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

A beautiful deep ruby-red dahlia that blooms prolifically. Stunning cut flower; the color intensifies in water (at least for me, or maybe it's just that the hue seems to change when inside). Highly recommend.
I had 2 last season. The color was right but the petal shape looked nothing like the picture. One only bloomed with a wide open center. The other had a closed center but petals were more round…the shape was like an Einstein. Even taking the side buds off 2 leaf sets down it would bloom deep in the plant. And it seemed more prone to pest than others. I’m in North Florida and maybe it didn’t like the heat, although I found it on heat tolerant lists.
Juanita was a last minute purchase and what a wonderful surprise. The photos don’t do her justice. Luscious velvety ruby petals. Adds texture and looks great in an arrangement. One caveat, it bloomed very late.
