Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

One of my absolute favorites - the flowers are striking and demand a second look! Be aware that these are a bit late (as are many of the larger dahlias) so give them plenty of time to get going. Pre-sprouting and potting up to get a few week jump on the season helps.
Stunning, gorgeous flower. 9 inches across. 5.5 feet tall. Grew in Zone 5b in Michigan in full sun. Needs a powerful stake (I used a metal beam) or it can flop over.
I know if we could have had a show this year, this flower would have taken Best of Show. It has huge perfect blooms that hold themselves well on their stem. Give it lots of sun and you will not be disappointed!
