Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

I was impressed with the size of the plant that grew from 1 tuber and how many blooms there were throughout the season. The plant was only 3' high in my Midwest zone 5b garden.
Like most bi-colored blooms, they aren't always that stable and can throw a few solid blooms. But the all red-blooms were as impressive as the bi-colored ones.
I highly recommend this variety for your garden.
Checkers is a dahlia that really stands out with her unique beauty and pattern. This is a very proliferous dahlia. (Zone 5/6 in south central Michigan)
I love this dahlia. It only grows to 2' in my garden but it is one of the 1st to bloom & while most of the flowers are as pictured, some are all burgundy, some all white w/a petal of the opposing color. Someone mentioned a problem w/powdery mildew but I didn't have that problem last season. I did spray a fungicide for it this season as we had a drought followed by heavy rains. Always a recipe for disaster!
Checkers was my first dahlia to bloom in my NY garden in early July. My others make me wait until August. She has beautiful burgundy blooms, some are spotted with a lot of white and some almost solid. She is a prolific bloomer and flowers are great for cutting. A keeper.
This dahlia is so gorgeous! It survived the heat and humidity of our DC area summer and produces amazing flowers. I love how each one is slightly different! Even though I have several different dahlias in my front yard, this is the one that stops my neighbors in their tracks. I will definitely buy this again!
