Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

Decent for cutting. Average amount of flowers.
I found this one blows the center very early, so I need to experiment with early cuttings. I wanted to use her for wedding work, but I just didn't get the stems I needed out of her. Will give her one more year, since she's unique, but definitely won't keep her if she doesn't perform well next year, since she can't last in the work I do for CSA and small business arrangements.
I absolutely loved this dahlia in my garden, but it did not store well. I will miss it this year, as its petals are truly special and the colors really pop.
Beautifully ruffled in lavender pink with white. I had pink petticoat couple years back. They weren’t big but they were really beautiful, looked just like the top picture. I’m going to buy one for next year.
