Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

I look for dahlias that are not immediate show-stoppers, but instead offer a range of nuanced color that makes description by color difficult. This one fits that bill -- shades of pink, salmon, lavender, and contrasting from saturated to pastel colors, I look forward to its blooms every year.
This was my favorite Swan Island dahlia. It grew to 6 ft tall and was covered in blooms all season long! Just happy to be in the garden. It looks great in a vase with dahlias of all colors! Plays so nicely with others. And such a pretty shape!! I will definitely plant it again next season. Anxious to check out the tuber production!
First to bloom this year despite two heat waves and doing great, wonderful cut flower and in the garden. Stunning colors in the sun.
This dahlia is my favorite! I didn't have huge expectations, but it has won me over. Super productive (not during the peak of summer) it has the most blooms consistently of any of my plants. On my plant, the petals are serrated, not smooth like in the photo but I am not complaining. The color is stunning and changes through the season. This is my second year growing this dahlia and it will be a regular in my garden from now on.
Not only the water lily type flower is delicate and pretty, but also it is covered with more than 20 blooms constantly. One of my favorites!
