How to Grow

Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

No blooms with two attempts

I love the color of these so much, but was super disappointed the two times I tried to grow it (in Oregon in the same valley as the farm). The plant grew fine both times, but not a single bloom either time from brand new tubers, so I gave up on this one. I grew over a dozen other varieties from Swan Island in the exact same garden space next to this flowerless plant and all did fantastic, so I don’t buy that my technique or fertilizing practices had anything to do with it. And from the other reviews I see I’m not alone!

Unusual color long stems

I am surprised at the reviews on this one. Zone 8b Oregon early July and this is one of my earliest bloomers. Lots of buds and the color is complex - hard to describe - but another reviewer said Smokey mauve which I like. Excellent cut flower does well in mixed bouquets. Don’t pass by this one!! Looking forward to many more blooms.

One of the first to bloom

We live in a cold climate, zone 5a and this one was one of the first to bloom. Had a ton of flowers and then bloomed again late season. Nice dusky color.

No luck so far….

I have had horrible luck growing this variety in No. CA zone 9b. I have tried for three years with brand new tubers. Ugh!

Not good in CA, Zone 9

This dahlia didn't bloom, or grow to full size. Could be the CA heat. Some dahlias are prolific in our climate, like Hollyhill Black Beauty, Shabby Chic, Thomas Edison, Foxy Lady and Sweet Nathalie. I will let this one stay for one more season to give it another chance, but if it duds out again, I won't be growing the following season.

Nice color

This dahlia grew fine for me. It bloomed at average time. It had many (not profuse) blooms. The color is smoky mauve, I really like the color.

Disappointed

Grown on Long Island, NY - The plant grew to 3 feet tall as described. I was so excited for these blooms to compliment my bouquets. Unfortunately, the plant only produced one flower the whole season. I was surprised because dahlias with small flowers usually give loads of blooms! I got four tubers from the plant, but three rotted in storage. The fourth partially rotted. I tried cutting away the rotten part, we'll see if I can get it to survive and give this guy another chance. I know that sometimes dahlias don't like the Northeast as much as the PNW. Maybe this is one of those varieties? The one flower that I did get was cute and exactly as pictured!

Sadly, this was my only plant that didn't grow or produce any blooms.

This only grew to approximately 18 inches tall and had no blooms. Not sure what happened as my other dahlias did well.
