Dahlias are grown from tubers (similar to a bulb, but thin-skinned like a potato). Plant tubers in the springtime, about the same time as you would your vegetable gardens or when the ground is warm enough to work up and play in daily. Plant them in a full sun location (giving them 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) and enjoy blooms all summer long. They will bloom and provide you with color and abundant flowers for cutting and enjoying throughout the summer.
The more you cut a dahlia plant, the more it will bloom. Most cut dahlias will last up to 5 days once cut and treated.

This is an amazing dahlia. Sturdy stems, beautiful and unique blooms, and the bugs in my area don’t bother it. The blooms are AMAZING and they get compliments everywhere I take them. The classification says it doesn’t make a good cut flower but I have to disagree. I have vases full of it around my house. Love.

Very late; flowers lopsided and droopy
I had high hopes for this, my largest flower type. When it finally began blooming in September, the buds took weeks to open, and October rain and wind disheveled them. The long, floppy petals were too vulnerable. Looked more like a mop head. Unlike the crisp ruffles in these photos. I plan to give this away.

Extraordinary flower
This dahlia reaches 8' tall at our home. The stems (which look like bamboo stalks) support it with no staking in a protected area too. We've never dug it up and it has overwintered just fine for nine years. It is absolutely spectacular.
